A traditional instrument of Madagascar, with twenty two strings, eleven on each side, offering a three octave range in the standard tuning of D major. MacArthur Harp Named after the late Margaret MacArthur who used an original Harp-Zither in concerts and recordings. This MacArthur Harp is a replica of the Harp-Zither invented by Carl E. Brown and manufactured in the early 1900's by the Harp-O-Chord company. It is crafted with hardwoods and a spruce top, having 11 melody strings and 3 sets of chord strings. It is generally played by plucking the melody strings and accompanying yourself with the chord strings. The stock tuning is a 1-1/2 octave diatonic scale starting at G above Middle C, with the chords C, G7, and F, but many alternate tunings may be used. Lark Alpine Concert Zither - Munich Tuning Ever wanted to play "The Harry Lime Theme" from the movie "The Third Man"? Then this Lark Alpine Concert Zither is the instrument for you! This 32 string zither is built to use standard loop end steel strings, not $300 per set zither strings, so you can customize the tuning without being intimidated. The 5 melody strings have a split bridge to eliminate any intonation problems common with concert zithers, and the fingerboard is scalloped for ease in playing tremolo, bends and slurs. The 27 accompaniment strings are tuned in the traditional "circle of fifths" tuning, which is far easier to actually use than to describe. Think of it like using bar chords on a guitar, similar to a accordion layout. The notes are stamped into the body for ease of tuning. Though used traditionally in Northern European folk and classical music, the Alpine Concert Zither BEGS to be applied to jazz, new age and soundtracks. This Zither is in (Adam Darr) Munich Tuning (a,a,d,g,c) [ZIToooM]. Instruction book available, see A) Don't retune it. It is meant to be tuned to the notes stamped on it. Except for the last 3 bass strings. Those would generally be tuned to a few notes useful to the song you are playing. Don't tune them too high or they will break. All of them should be below the last stamped string G#. If you want to use something higher it wont hurt anything to replace them with just about any metal string. B) Replace all the other (stamped) strings with the same gauge string. C) All of the chord strings are either .017p, .022w, .032w .042w or .052w, with the exception of the last 3 bass strings which there is no set tuning for, so range from .057 to .070. D) The melody strings are .013 (2), .022w, .032w, .052w. E) Don't try to tune a Munich Zither into a Vienna zither, or vice versa. You would have to replace almost all the strings.
