Songbird Bowed Psaltery The Bowed Psaltery is a unique instrument with an etherial sound. It is descended to us from at least medieval times. This modern version is fully chromatic, and set up like a piano so it is easy to understand. The strings on the right side are the white keys on the piano, and the strings on the left side are the black keys. You bow each note individually where it's string comes to the edge using the special bow made just for the Psaltry. The sound is clear and resonant with lots of harmonics. Nothing else sounds like this. They are useful in ensamble with other instruments, and are good for playing melodies while somebody else accompanies. Psaltery, Baritone, Right-Handed The Bowed Psaltery is a very beautiful melody instrument and also a very easy instrument to play. The notes on a psaltery are similar to those on a piano. The natural notes, or white keys, are on one side and the sharps and flats, or black keys, are on the other. Each string plays one note. Using the psaltery bow, move across each string to play that particular note. The sound is beautiful, clear, and almost ethereal. This right-handed psaltery has 37 strings and a spruce soundboard with rosewood back and sides. The single sound hole features an intricately carved rosewood rosette.
